Hobbits 看起来很难和勇敢联系起来。他们习惯安稳生活，也害怕黑暗、陌生道路和无法驯服的东西。书里反复写的却是另一种过程。危险到了眼前，一个人来不及先确认自己够不够勇敢，身体已经准备行动；朋友仍在险境，他也无法独自离开。
勇气：为更高层级的存续承担个人风险 讨论勇气的方向，个人为了他人或共同体承担什么。这里写的是勇气显露的时机。有些人平时胆怯，到了必须保护朋友的时刻，仍会做出勇敢的行动。
