Charlie 的智力从 70 升到 185，仍然离 Alice 一样远

Charlie 还没有接受手术时，把聪明想成通向友谊的门票：

If your smart you can have lots of frends to talk to and you never get lonley by yourself all the time. (Location 189)

后来他的智力升到 185，和 Alice 的距离却仍然存在：

I realize now that my feeling for Alice had been moving backward against the current of my learning, from worship, to love, to fondness, to a feeling of gratitude and responsibility. My confused feeling for her had been holding me back, and I had clung to her out of my fear of being forced out on my own, and cut adrift. But with the freedom came a sadness. I wanted to be in love with her. I wanted to overcome my emotional and sexual fears, to marry, have children, settle down. Now it’s impossible. 两次孤独的成因并不相同。过去的 Charlie 被别人排斥，也难以理解他们；后来的 Charlie 看得更快、更远，Alice 却无法和他处在同一个速度里。智力消除了一部分隔阂，又制造出新的隔阂。
