talent 原本是个货币单位。

古希腊的 talanton 本义是"秤盘、重量"，后来成了一笔很大的钱的名目。它变成"天赋"，靠的是《圣经·马太福音》25:14-30 那个比喻：

In Biblical times, a talent was a unit of money, and a New Testament parable tells of a master punishing a servant for hiding, rather than investing, a bag of talents in the master's absence.

主人远行前把银子分给三个仆人。头两个拿去做买卖翻了倍，第三个怕赔，把银子埋进土里。主人回来，赏了前两个，罚了第三个。

The interpretation of this parable to mean that you should not hide your "God-given talents" has led to the current meaning of the word as the special qualities a person possesses.

被赐予的不应该藏起来，应当拿出去用。 这个道德训诫用得太广，久而久之"talents"就从那袋银子变成了那份天赋本身。

值得留意的是词义迁移里保留下来的东西：talent 至今仍带着"受托保管、必须交出成果"的意味——它不是你的财产，是一笔要还的账。和 把天赋挣的钱当利息花，迟早贫困 对读。
