何伟很少抒情,只把古今放在一起
《寻路中国》里,何伟走过一座明代城堡,看到墙上刷着世界银行贷款的白色标语:
在明代城堡的墙上,也刷着一条白色的标语: 抓住世行贷款机遇,帮助山区脱贫致富 这些城墙一度为了抵御蛮夷而建,如今却已在欢迎世行贷款。
过了一会儿,他又写:
在明代城堡的废墟上涂刷世界银行的标语,好像也是个馊主意。不过,长城曾历经无数次侵袭而毫发无损,毫无疑问,它还将这样挺立下去,雄踞在山脊之上——只要最后一拨蛮夷之人已经烟消云散。
我当时在旁边记了一句:
我就喜欢 Peter Hessler 这样的写法,不抒情,顶多进行古今对比,让读者自行感受。联想到 River Town 里描写的被淹没的村庄。
River Town 里的原文也值得留在这里:
Even the relic of the White Crane Ridge had started as a sort of vandalism—Tang Dynasty boatsmen scratching onto a perfectly innocent piece of sandstone—and if the man-made dam destroyed the man-made carvings, there was perhaps something appropriate about that. The engravings had been made to serve boatsmen, just as the river had always served man in so many ways.
古迹、工程和河流被摆在一个画面里,读者自己去感受那种不对劲。判断已经在细节的选择中,又没有被说尽。到了北山即将沉入水库的段落,这种写法又与 世界陆沉 连了起来。
