When we're older, we're a collection of thousands of habits constantly running subconsciously. We have a little bit of extra brainpower in our neocortex for solving new problems. You become your habits

James Clear 也把习惯的价值放在自动化上。一个动作重复到不再需要逐次决定,就能释放注意力去处理新的问题:

A habit is a behavior that has been repeated enough times to become automatic (Location 598)

Habits reduce cognitive load and free up mental capacity, so you can allocate your attention to other tasks (Location 622)

成千上万个习惯在后台自动运行,新皮层只剩一点余量处理新问题。因此,想改变自己,可以先列一份具体的清单:养成哪个习惯,改掉哪个习惯,方法见 Atomic Habits

自动化也会越过检查。书里有个店员,按规定剪掉已经用完的礼品卡。连续处理几位顾客以后,她顺手把下一位顾客真正的信用卡也剪成了两半:

I once heard of a retail clerk who was instructed to cut up empty gift cards after customers had used up the balance on the card. One day, the clerk cashed out a few customers in a row who purchased with gift cards. When the next person walked up, the clerk swiped the customer’s actual credit card, picked up the scissors, and then cut it in half—entirely on autopilot—before looking up at the stunned customer and realizing what had just happened. 习惯回路:提示、渴望、反应与奖励 解释一项动作怎样逐渐固定下来,行为觉察:自动行为只有进入意识后才能改变 则处理自动程序已经过时以后,怎样重新看见它。习惯替人省下判断,也可能把旧判断长期保留下来。

斯多葛也强调每天分拣、预演、复盘,反复练习判断。哲学是练出来的,靠的就是这种日复一日的练习。
