tutelage

tutelage 不是泛指"教育"，而是专门的、一对一的指导（specialized and individual guidance）。词根来自拉丁语 tueri，"看顾、守护"——同源的还有 tutor（导师）和 tutelary（守护神的）。所以它天然带着一层监护关系，不只是传授知识。

课本上的例句给的是最有名的一对师徒：

Alexander the Great was under the tutelage of the philosopher Aristotle between the ages of 13 and 16, and his tutor inspired him with a love of philosophy, medicine, and science. At 16 he commanded his first army, and by his death 16 years later he had founded the greatest empire ever seen.

有意思的是这段话的最后一句，它没有顺势歌颂教育：

But it's not so easy to trace the effects of the brilliant tutelage he had received in his youth.

很难说清那三年究竟起了什么作用。 亚历山大爱哲学、爱医学、爱科学是真的，但他十六岁带兵、三十二岁死时已建起前所未见的帝国——这里面有多少是 亚里士多德 教的？

这个诚实的收尾比故事本身更值钱。它提醒的是同一件事：归咎直觉：找元凶不如找原因 的正面版本——好结果一样容易被归给某个响亮的名字。
