Isidore

What is a chicken-head? What is their social status? - Chicken-head are those individuals who suffered mental and intellectual disabilities because of exposures to the radioactive dust. They are forced to stay on Earth. Their social status is to be derided upon, sometimes they were not even considered to be humans by others. What do you think of Isidore’s interaction with Priss? - It looks like any awkward first encounter between two people. Isidore trying to impress Priss was met with Priss’s nonchalance. As the interactions progressed, the lack of understanding about the empathy box and kipple leads readers to realized that the girl’s coldness is not due to her unwillingness but her being a robot without the ability of empathy. Do either of them exhibit empathy? - Isidore exhibited empathy by bringing a piece of butter and said something like “I’m the only one bides you and I won’t bother you.”That’s why his behavior was described as “possessing the quality of an authentic old pre-war ritual.” - Priss didn’t seem to exhibit any empathy. Does Isidore seem mentally disabled? - From the interaction between him and Priss, it didn’t seem that Isidore was mentally disabled. If anything, he just always felt inferior to other humans therefore tending to blame himself for things that didn’t go well. What is notable about the cat and fake cat on pp. 68-69? - Isidore at first thought the cat he brought back was a fake one and was amazed by its level of authenticity and then it turned out to be a real one that’s dying. The company offers service to replace the dead cat with a robotic one but the boss pointed out that the owner of the animal will always detect the fake within seconds. How does this relate to the issue chickenheads? - They are having hard times to differentiate what is real and what is fake and granted that “the fakes are beginning to be darn near real.” Aside from a childlike innocence, are there really differences between chickenheads and normals? (p.73) - Chickenheads are not born this way. All human on earth suffered from the radioactive dust, chickenheads are those unfortunates who suffered the most that not only they looked terrible but also they developed certain cognitive impairments. Failing to pass the IQ test classified them as chickenheads but individuals vary. In the case of Isidore, to a certain degree, he was just too ashamed of his physical appearance to function like a normal being. Given proper encouragement, he can behave just as normal as other human. He showed even more empathy than other humans as he still felt extremely awful when the “fake” cat was dying.
