“对自己诚实”在 Polonius 口中是一整套处世术的收尾

“To thine own self be true”常被单独引用。《Hamlet》里的原划线保存了它前面的整套忠告：少说，多听，朋友要经过考验，少与人争执，衣着贵而不炫，也不要借钱或放债。对自己诚实在这里是处世术的最后一句。

思想放在心头，不可放在口头。 想法如有漏洞，不可付诸行动。 处事随和，却不可吊儿郎当， 结友交朋，真情谊须经历考验风浪， 但成知己，钢圈一副锁他在你心房。 点头之交，无非泛泛新知面， 握手言欢，不可过度与周旋。 小心翼翼，慎勿涉身斗殴与争执； 一旦卷入，须叫对手知你不可欺。 多听人言，少抒己见； 广纳评议，心存自断。 量财而置盛装， 不宜奇装异服，须贵而不炫不浮； 穿着最见人品， 须学法国名流，大方而不艳不俗。 不做欠户，不为债主； 向人借钱者， 难免不知节俭而浪用； 借钱予人者，常常本钱友谊两落空。 千言万语成一句，理如昼夜相交替： 对自己，勿自欺， 不我欺者不人欺。

对自己诚实 收的是 Naval 对诚实的另一种解释。他关心思想与表达分裂后，头脑同时维护多条线的负担。Polonius 的说法更接近日常戒律，而且由一个言行并不总与忠告相符的人说出。两者共享一句中文标题，语境不同。

"To thine own self be true" 被单独摘出来当格言用了几百年，而它在原文里是一长串处世建议的最后一句，前面全是怎样穿衣、怎样借钱、怎样交友。 放回上下文，它更像"这样你就不会吃亏"，而不是一条道德律令。

别靠摘要略过大师的智慧 讲的正是这种损耗：摘出来的那句话可以完全正确，同时完全不是原意。 建议的可信度取决于建议者承担多少后果 提示了另一个读法，Polonius 给儿子的建议自己一条也不必兑现。
